How Do I Move Out?

It’s best to reverse the steps you took when moving in, but there are some best practices to keep in mind:

  • When it’s time to move out, do so within the agreed timeframe.
  • Make sure to leave the place clean and in the same condition as when you moved in. This will help you get your security deposit back and a good reference for future rentals.
  • When moving out, it’s important to take photos of the same areas and details that you documented when you first moved in. This helps provide a clear record of the unit’s condition both before you arrived and after you leave.
Giving Notice
  • Your lease will tell you how much notice, if any, you have to give when you intend to terminate/stop living somewhere. Ending your lease early is not always possible.
    • For a yearly lease, you need to give at least 3 months’ notice before the end of the term if you plan to move out.
    • For a monthly lease, you must provide a full month’s notice before your intended move-out date (specifically, by the day before the start of the last month you plan to stay).
    • If you have a fixed-term lease, notice is not required. Your lease will simply end on the specified date. If you wish to stay longer, you must ask your landlord, who can either approve or deny your request.
